The exploitation of exploitation.
I have to say that I rather enjoyed Steven Monroe’s remake in 2010. That film was a huge improvement on the original. The characters seemed more three-dimensional, the situations way more tense and uncomfortable, and the film even played around with some moral greyness toward the end of the film, which only made me that much more invested in the situation. I call it a situation because saying that any of the ‘I Spit on Your Grave’ films have a story would be stretching it a little far.
While the remake was well done, or at least as well done as a film like it could be and had a somewhat logical story that lead to some pretty gut wrenching scenes, this one has none of that. There is no story arch, no real story at all, the whole thing is utterly ridiculous. Girl goes to photo shoot, does not want to undress for nude pictures and gets raped, abducted to Romania, gang raped and buried alive.
How bad is this movie? Well I’ll put it this way, a good seventy-five percent of it is the dehumanization of the female lead and yet I still didn’t care about her. The reason for that is because the entire situation she is involved in is just way to unbelievable. It’s as though they somehow managed to make a B version of the 2010 remake. Basically you get 60 Minutes of rape, 20 minutes of really overplayed uninteresting drama and 20 minutes of what felt like boring revenge.
There are no characters here, just stereotypes, and everyone is presented in the same cheapest good/bad guy way and introduced just to be killed off or rot on the sidelines of the so called plot-line. Seriously everyone is just standing around either waiting to rape her, or waiting to be killed off while they try to look as evil as possible. The lead Jemma Dallender is so ungodly annoying as her only job in this thing is to cry, whimper, or show some kind of pain.
Even the kill and torture scenes are annoying. It’s as though they were so out of ideas that they decided to call up Fred Vogul (August Underground) and ask him for ways in which dumb people can be tortured on screen. They are so poorly lit half the time that you cannot even see what’s suppose to be happening.
Surely the ending would take us someplace we haven’t been before, right? I mean sure she gets raped and tortured, and than gets her revenge but something else happens, right? Wrong. That’s it, that’s all we get. Just another rehash of the same old tired rape revenge tale that we have been getting for the past few decades. It really makes me wonder who exactly these films are for. It’s most certainly not for female viewers, as the protagonist although female is an annoying shell of a character. The only people I can think of that take something away from I Spit on Your Grave 2 is horny males who are seeking a rape fantasy, or want to see some full frontal skin. I’m okay with that, if that’s what you’re looking for in your movie than by all means watch away but for anyone looking for even the slightest hint of a story stay away.
This is a bad film. It is the exploitation of exploitation films. It’s so bad that I can’t even say that at least the camera work was well done, or the technical aspects looked good, because everything was so poorly done and amateurish. It’s a copy and paste sequel that takes the same basic plot and puts it in a different setting and a bad one at that. At least with the original, or the 2010 remake I could say it’s for the gore fans or those looking for some cool kills. I’m not sure who this sequel is for, certainly not fans of people who enjoy a little class in their rape revenge films.
