Let’s face it, sex and horror go together like chocolate and peanut butter, It’s almost as if you can’t have one without the other. There is a lot that can be said about the role of women in horror films. Sure, a lot of them are only there to scream, show their tits and than get killed, but at the same time the horror genre is also has had some of the greatest roles for females. So many come to mind: Ripley from Alien, Sydney from Scream, Laurie from the Halloween series. They all portray strong independent women who totally kick ass while looking super hot doing so.
This list will be separated into five parts, showcasing fifteen women who have stood out and managed to find away to leave their mark in the very crowded history of horror.
10. Rose McGowan
I think it’s safe to say that over the years McGowan’s boyfriends (Marilyn Manson, Robert Rodriguez) have sort of over shadowed her career. Her first foray into the horror scene came when Wes Craven put her as the big boobed best friend in the original Scream, the unexpected and overwhelming success of that film helped put a number of its actors on the map. Not only was she in Scream she also had one of the most memorable death scenes in the entire franchise. She played Paige Mathews (a witch) on the long running television series Charmed, and had a small role in DePalma’s The Black Dahlia. It wasn’t until Quentin Tarantino, and Robert Rodriguez got together to make their retro throwback Grindhouse that she would get the leading role she deserved. She played the machine gun legged stripper in Planet Terror, and the blonde hippy girl in Tarantino’s truly awesome girl power flick Death Proof. Very few girls can be labeled the full package, but McGowan is one of them.
11. Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Mary Elizabeth Winstead is without a doubt one of the most beautiful women on the planet, but we often forget that she seems to have a liking for the horror genre. She actually started off at a very young age, playing the Young Evelyn in the follow up to the massively successful The Ring. She grew up, and would return to horror with Final Destination 3 (which some consider to be the best in that series) where she took the lead role and caught lots of attention. After cheating death, she would play Heather Fitzgerald in the holiday remake of Black Christmas that is better than one might expect. She to would star in the Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse segment Death Proof, as the ditsy cheerleader, play Mary Todd Lincoln in the Abraham Lincoln vampire killing tale, and even took the lead role in the 2011 prequel to John Carpenter’s The Thing. She has proved countless times that not only is she easy on the eyes, but also one of the toughest girls the genre has to offer.
12. Linnea Quigley
I just wouldn’t feel right about myself if I didn’t include Linnea Quigley on this list. I mean seriously, this woman has worked on so many classic horror films it would take me days to even list them all. However I suppose the first time she really gained attention was as the bad ass biker gang chick in the cult classic Return of the Living Dead, where she danced completely naked on top of graves, it’s to this day one of her most iconic moments. She damn well dominated the B movie scene during the late 1980’s, early 1990’s making appearances in countless films including: the original Night of the Demons, Silent Night, Deadly Night. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Blood Nasty, Pumpkinhead 2, among so many more. In fact it’s crazy just how many times during my younger days I would rewind VHS tapes to see her nudity scenes (in which she did in almost all her films) and not even realize it was the same girl until now. She continues to work today, and has what seems like an unlimited number of low budget horror films coming out in the next few years, proving herself as a horror scream queen in the truest sense.
