Let’s face it, sex and horror go together like chocolate and peanut butter, It’s almost as if you can’t have one without the other. There is a lot that can be said about the role of women in horror films. Sure, a lot of them are only there to scream, show their tits and than get killed, but at the same time the horror genre is also has had some of the greatest roles for females. So many come to mind: Ripley from Alien, Sydney from Scream, Laurie from the Halloween series. They all portray strong independent women who totally kick ass while looking super hot doing so.
This list will be separated into five parts, showcasing fifteen women who have stood out and managed to find away to leave their mark in the very crowded history of horror.
7. Katherine Isabelle
This Canadian beauty is legendary in the horror genre. She got her start at a very young age, even appearing on an episode of Goose Bumps way back in the day. I first took note of her in Ginger Snaps, where she played the goth older sister who turned into a werewolf around the same time she got her first period. From that point onward she has showed up in countless films and television programs from blockbusters to hidden indies. She reprized her role as Ginger in the two follow ups, made guest appearances on The X-files, played the overly horny friend in Freddy vs Jason, appeared in the Carrie made for television film, the 30 Days of Night sequel, and was the lead in the fantastic American Mary, along with countless other things. This year alone she has worked on four horror films and only continues to grow in popularity. Those (me) wanting to see a little more of her will be disappointed to here that she refuses to do nude scenes and always relies on a body double for those scenes.
8. Danielle Harris
Considered by many to be the reigning scream queen of horror, Danielle Harris sure has a pretty impressive resume. You could say she got her start with Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, as it was really the first time she was recognized in the horror scene. From there she was worked on the follow up Halloween 5, and although that film is often called the worst Halloween film, she would over come that. She’d go on to play Annie in both of Rob Zombie’s Halloween films, and would take over the role of Marybeth in Hatchet 2, and 3. In 2011 she won the best actress award at the Shockfest Film Festival certifying both her ability to act as well as her iconic horror status. Other notable appearances by her include Urban Legend, Stake Land, and even directing her very own horror film last year titled Among Friends. Although she has a string of films lined up for this year and next, she does plan to take some time off from acting to concentrate on directing.
9. Anna Paquin
Most (if not everyone) knows miss Anna Paquin as Sookie Satckhouse – the wide eyed gap toothed, incredibly gorgeous waitress on HBO’s True Blood. Yes, I know the later seasons of True Blood suck, but there is no denying that miss Paquin can make anything watchable (okay, almost anything). As I said, most know her from the show, or as Rogue in the early X Men movies. However she has been involved with more work in the horror genre than you might think. She took the lead role in 2002’s Darkness, played the innocent but deadly Little Red Riding Hood in the masterpiece that is Trick R Treat, and even had a cameo in Scream 4. True Blood is coming to an end, and I can only hope that she continues to focus on her dark side, as it seems to bring out the best (and hottest) in her.
